Schafer Suspended One Game
CHN Staff Report
ALBANY, N.Y. The ECAC has suspended Cornell coach Mike Schafer for one game for his actions following last Saturday's loss to Michigan State at Lynah Rink.
Schafer will sit this Friday's ECAC opener for Cornell at Yale.
According to witness accounts, Cornell fans and Michigan State players got into a verbal sparring match after the game. As things escalated, Schafer went to the Michigan State players and tried to get them to leave the ice surface.
"The Cornell Department of Athletics and Physical Education respects the authority of the ECACHL," said Cornell athletic director Andy Noel. "Coach Schafer tried to calm a situation before it escalated. He regrets grabbing the jersey of an opposing player in an attempt to guide the team safely off the ice. We addressed this matter internally, and with this suspension consider the matter closed.
"Mike is a tremendous teacher of young men and a great role model in our community. We continue to offer Mike and his program our unwavering support."
ECAC commissioner Steve Hagwell was in attendance at the game.
