UNO 4 Remain Out with Suspensions

CHN Staff Report

OMAHA, Neb. — Nebraska-Omaha sophomore goaltender Jerad Kaufmann was among four players suspended by coach Mike Kemp for a "violation of team rules," and the suspension will last at least through this weekend.

The suspension was effective for the Nov. 21 game against Minnesota State, and continues at least through the Nov. 24-25 weekend. The Mavericks are back in the league this weekend with games against Notre Dame.

The other suspended players were junior forward Mick Lawrence, junior forward Bill Bagron, and freshman forward Chris Wilson.

Kemp told the Omaha World Herald that the players were suspended for drinking alcohol during the team's recent trip to Oxford, Ohio, to play Miami. All but Wilson is of legal drinking age. Kemp also told the paper that the length of the suspensions could vary.

After a 3-1-3 start, the Mavericks lost five in a row before Tuesday's tie. Friday, the Mavericks lost the weekend opener to Notre Dame, with third-stringer Eric Aarnio getting the start in goal.

Kaufmann has struggled in net to open the season, after a storybook freshman season. Kaufmann was brought in as a third-stringer, but wound up taking over starting duties and had a solid freshman campaign, going 17-11-6 with a 3.00 GAA and .897 save percentage. This year, his stats are an extremely sub-par 3.80 GAA and .854 save percentage.

The No. 2 goalie, Jeremie Dupont, a 17-year old freshman who started Tuesday, has been barely better, with a 3.49 GAA and .868 save percentage. Aarnio, a junior, was in just three games last year and six as a freshman. Friday was his first appearance of the 2006-07 season.

Lawrence has two goals and seven points in 11 games this season. He had 10 goals last season. Wilson played in just six games so far this year, with one assist. And Bagron was in six games, with no points.

The Mavericks already lost senior forward Nenad Gajic earlier this season, when he decided to leave school to play professional indoor lacrosse.
