Kessel Receiving Medical Treatment
CHN Staff Report
BOSTON Former Minnesota and Team USA star, and current NHL rookie, Phil Kessel is being treated for a medical issue "unrelated to hockey," the Boston Bruins announced Monday.
Currently playing for the Bruins, who drafted him fifth overall last June, Kessel will sit out while being treated for an undisclosed illness. No further details were released.
Later in the evening, WBZ-TV in Boston reported that Kessel was being treated for testicular cancer, which generally has a high cure rate.
Kessel played one season for the Gophers, leading the team in scoring with 51 points, before signing with Boston last August. He has five goals and four assists in 27 NHL games.
He also has the most goals in the history of the U.S. National Team Development Program.
"At this time there is no further update on Phil's condition," said his family in a statement. "When there is an update, and it is appropriate to do so, we will update everyone on Phil's health."
