Whitehead Apologizes to Officials
CHN Staff Report
WAKEFIELD, Mass. Hockey East released a statement today, announcing that Maine coach Tim Whitehead apologized to league officials for behavior following Saturday's loss to Boston University in Orono.
"We expect our head coaches, like our athletes and officials, to show restraint in the middle of the heat of battle," Hockey East commissioner Joe Bertagna said. "Tim has always conducted himself appropriately. I am pleased he
has acknowledged this uncharacteristic lapse in judgment in this one incident."
Whitehead declined to comment.
"The events that took place at the conclusion of Saturday night's game were an unfortunate ending to a tough weekend series," said Maine athletic director Blake James. "I am confident that the players, coaches and officials involved recognize the importance of demonstrating good sportsmanship."
Saturday's game had roughly the same amount of power play for each team, but the Black Bears were called for four different 10-minute misconducts. Two were for shooting pucks on net that referee Scott Hansen deemed were well after the whistle.
Whitehead was also given a misconduct after the game, a 3-0 win by BU to complete a two-game sweep, was over. That's when, reportedly, Whitehead and Hansen had a lengthy shouting match.
