Bina Charged In Bar Bust
CHN Staff Report
GRAND FORKS, N.D. Robbie Bina, whose strong return from a broken neck has prompted a lot of praise for his play and character, is facing a misdemeanor for allegedly trying to help two underage friends escape a police car during a bust at a local bar, according to reports.
Those two underage friends just so happen to be star Sioux sophomores Jonathan Toews, 18, and T.J. Oshie. They were picked up last week for being a "minor on the premises."
According to the prosecutor's office, Bina, 24, opened the door of a patrol car where two of them sat and then walked away. He will be charged with escaping custody, a Class B misdemeanor, which carries a maximum punishment of a $1,000 fine and 30 days in jail.
North Dakota coach Dave Hakstol took command of the situation by asking the Grand Forks police chief to meet with the team Friday morning.
No one, however, was commenting about that, or the original situation.
"(Bina's) being charged, but being charged is not guilty," UND spokesman Peter Johnson told the Associated Press. "We'll have to see what happens in the legal system."
Bina suffered a broken neck in March 2005 at the WCHA Final Five. He took all of last season off. This season, he has eight goals so far.
