After a 4-12-3 start, the Ferris State Bulldogs seemed to be down and out. But in the second half of the year Ferris State seemed to come to life a little bit, especially in February when the Bulldogs went 6-2 with their only losses coming against Michigan State and Notre Dame.
"It was a disappointing start," said head coach Bob Daniels about 2006-07. "We would have liked to have played better hockey, but after Christmas we played well, and gained momentum towards the playoffs."
In their first-round series, the Bulldogs were involved in a very tight battle with lake Superior State. After winning the first game 3-2 in overtime, the Bulldogs lost the final two games, both by one goal.
The team's captain in 2007-08 will remain the same for the third year in a row; senior defenseman Adam Welch will look to guide the Bulldogs toward the right direction.
"Adam is a terrific leader," said Daniels. "He is mature and experienced and does well on and off the ice."
In 2007-08 there will be some competition in net between three competitors. Senior Derek MacIntyre, and junior Mitch O'Keefe all have experience in net, while freshman Patrick Nagel will look to make an immediate impact.
"This is our biggest challenge," said Daniels, "but all of them will challenge for that top spot in net."
Whatever the case may be, the goaltending will be helped out with six returning defensemen, led by captain Adam Welch and seniors Jim Jorgensen, and Alex Spezia.
"We have six returning defensemen," noted Daniels, "but freshmen as Zach Redmond could see a lot of ice time."
Whether they play the freshmen or not expect a big turnaround in goals against for the Bulldogs in 2007-08.
The recruiting class coming in this year might not be top notch, but the Bulldogs did fill some holes.
"I am happy with this recruiting class," said Daniels. "They are not big headliners, but we filled some needs with five forwards, two defensemen and a goaltender."
With recruits such as Nagel and Redmond, they can build the team around them for the next few years.
"Our goal is to win the league or the playoffs," Daniels said. "There are some question marks such as goal scoring, but if we fill those needs I think this a team that can challenge for a top four spot in the CCHA."
With teams such as Michigan State, Michigan, Miami and Notre Dame, the top four might be tough to achieve. But they aren't over their head. If one of those teams has a down year, Ferris State could jump into the top four.
