Former Gopher Hagemo Arrested
CHN Staff Report
MINNEAPOLIS Former Minnesota defenseman Nate Hagemo was arrested in Minneapolis on Saturday after neighbors called to report a car that was parked in a known drug transaction area.
Nate Hagemo after his arrest.
At the scene, officers found Hagemo and one other person. After receiving consent to search the car, they found drug paraphernalia of a drug user, including syringes and a drug kit. One of the syringes appeared to be filled with heroin, according to reports.
Police are still waiting to forward the case to prosecutors for charges.
Hagemo had a strong freshman season for the Gophers in 2004-05, scoring 10 points in 30 games. He was drafted by the Carolina Hurricanes that summer.
But a shoulder injury caused Hagemo to miss all but three games the following season. After his shoulder never recovered properly, he was forced to retire the following year.
I feel so bad for Nate. He is a great kid and a great hockey player and to have his hockey career end like it did is just wrong. Nate, you are in my thoughts and prayers and you will get through this.

This news is shocking, I grew up playing pickup hockey with Nate in Edina, nothing but shock really, Nate was always just a nice kid willing to dangle anyone in town...

Why is this news? If he was a current player it makes sense, but otherwise? This site doesn't tell us when former players go on to have success in life so why print their failures?

If a former player goes on to have success, like the Hall of Fame, or something of that ilk, then absolutely it's a story. ... This is a player who would be a senior this year. Of course it's news. People obviously care. They're reading it. It's been in all the Minnesota papers. ... You could take any story and ask why it's news. Anything that happens is, by definition, news.

When players go on to succeed in the NHL, that usually makes news...but in other outlets (papers, magazines, pro hockey web sites, etc.). This is newsworthy, too, but will only be reported in local/regional papers and on local/regional newscasts (haven't seen anything about it even in Grand Forks). Therefore, this may be the only outlet that gives a national audience a chance to read about it.

Definitely newsworthy. I'm embarrassed by some of the comments from some hockey fans on another team fan site who basically say, tough luck kid; I don't feel sorry for you in the least. Would these people have the same attitude if it was their son or daughter? Nate had a bright future ahead of him in hockey and it came to a sudden end. Who knows what kind of an impact that had on him in making the decision he made but trashing the guy certainly isn't the right thing to do. Hopefully this is "bottom" for him and he can get his life turned around.

I feel bad for Nate. There is a bright side; he is still very young and there is still time to turn his life around. I hope and pray this is a wake up call for him and he can recover from this and accomplish his dream of playing hockey. If not, there are plenty of other avenues he can go down that will give him success in life. But he has to take the first step and beat this addiction. Looking a this photo, it looks like meth, which is a tough drug to beat. Howver, it can be done.

For those hockey fans that don't have a heart when they see this, I just have one question for them. What if it was one of there friends, players or kids. Would you still say the same thing? I think that you would not. They have no right to judge Nate based on this. He is a great young adult and he just is down on his luck. Keep you your head up Nate and you have alot of people around Minnesota thinking of you. Also, I have a good idea of who those hockey fans are that said those terrible things about him. Good Sportsmanship there!!

While I feel bad for him in a way, I can say from experience that it is in no way doing Nate any service by making it sound as if this weren't his fault. Two of my siblings have dependency problems, and the very first thing they learn is that the whole thing is first and foremost THEIR responsibility and THEIR doing. I have no idea if he is in any way addicted (physically or mentally), but regardless, he put himself into this situation, and only he can turn things around. It's not like he's some innocent dupe who just fell into this by accident (assuming, of course, that he's guilty).
Jan 31 2008, 10:31 am by Chris Haake, Grand Forks ND
He's not innocent and I certainly don't believe anyone is giving him a pass but some out there do not seem to have any compassion for the kid, whatsoever. All I was saying to those people is, what if it was your kid? Would you still take the same blase attitude of, "hey, he did it to himself, I have no sympathy for him." I'm sure having a once-promising hockey career come to an end certainly didn't help matters and could have led to the mistakes and drugs that followed. As a Sioux fan, heck as a human, my heart goes out to Nate.

I see your point, but asking "what if it were your kid" isn't reasonable, as the person would not be subjective enough to render a good opinion. On the flip side, we don't ask crime victims what the punishments should be.

There are thousands of meth addicts, so we should only feel bad for a "one time promising hockey player" meth addict? Get real. Living in a large city, I see homeless/addicts all the time....no one posts on a blog about them. Stop kidding yourself, take ownership of you and yours (family and problems).
Jan 31 2008, 9:37 pm by
I personally know a meth addict and while there aren't any blogs or news articles certainly doesn't mean I or other people don't feel compassion for them. C'mon, get real and understand that none of us passing on our support to Nate by no means implies that he is better or more deserving than other addicts but rather he is in the public spotlight and a topic of discussion.

NATE IS A GOOD KID, HE WILL BRING HIMSELF OUT OF THIS AND BECOME A BETTER PERSON FOR IT

if the doctors didnt give him so much oxy contin for his shoulder injury than he might not be in this situation. its not the doctors fault he needs to take responsibility for this. hopefully he can pull himself out from this

His picture looks worse then the story makes it sound. This young man needs help. To anyone who knows him personally you better do what you can and fast before its too late. He looks like a faces of meth add.

Feb 6 2008, 10:29 am by Matt, St. Cloud
Hey Matt from St Cloud, Have a heart, he has had a bad year. Why don't you give the guy a break, you jerk. Typical SCSU Fan.

I, too, have wondered why the media jumps on a former athlete's failures. I have been told that it is because they also report the successes. This kid is a bad seed, so let's forget him, hope he gets help, and keep this sport, and the others, as clean as possible.
Feb 6 2008, 10:57 pm by Boborr, Aberdeen
Nate is not a bad seed, he had his hockey career end all of a suddenand all you people just talk bad about him that he is a trouble maker and he got what he deserved. That is not the case. Nate is a good kid. I met him about two years ago and he was very nice to talk to. So what ever your name is from Aberdeen, grow up and maybe we should forget about you and what ever you do. Also, do you now him personally? If you did then you would not have said that stuff about him you POS.

Nate hit a bicyclist in November '07, when he ran a red light. That gentleman has a long road to recovery (broken legs, knees, face). Nate refused a substance test at the scene of the "traffic accident". Despite the drug kit in his back seat, Hagemo was not arrested. Maybe he needs to be held accountable before he can start on the road to recovery?

quit being poons and feeling bad for him. no one made him take drugs its his fault for starting a destructive lifestyle. the story is just more awesome because its a gopher player and i hate the gophers, and no other team can claim their alum as stoners and head cases that see demons and freak balls after a final five loss.
Feb 8 2008, 12:27 am by Matt, St. Cloud
also one of the former gophers only has one testicle (kessel)
Feb 8 2008, 12:29 am by Matt, St. Cloud
All you st cloud fans are a bunch of idiots. Lets see you must be in at least what your sixth year of college? And what about the final five loss, what did you get from it? Nothing. You didn;t even make the NCAA tourn. And it seems to me that you got killed by UND the next night right? Also last season, what kind of a trophy did you get last year? Nothing, if I remember right. Leave Kessel alone you POS! What is the point of that you Dumb A__!

matt from st cloud do you hate the gophers because you can never beat them or did something happen and who got hockey started at scsu oh thats right a former GOPHER player and coach. for someione going to college you sure are an dingbat
Feb 8 2008, 12:22 pm by SARGE, MN
Dont call me a dingbat when your grammar is retardid (an dingbat? are you kidding? you only use "an" in front of vowels). I wouldnt care otherwise but you used it while calling me stupid. also when i was refering to final five loss i was talking about when MINN lost to CC and then Hirsch freaked out and skated into the net after taking a slap shot into it, because he saw demons or something like that, and wasnt at all talking about the time SCSU played them a few years ago and won, because yes obviosly nothing was won after it. But that does remind me, wasn't that the Holy Cross year?
Heres a link to the hirsch vid if you havent seen the freak

Your right about the Holy Cross year, but that was in the NCAA tourney, where were you that year? Not there. Also the FInal Five that year we lost to CC, were your guys there? I think that you were not. And do you know what Holy Cross has over you, they have won a tournement game and you guys have not yet.

WITH OR WITH OUT CORRECT GRAMMAR MATT YOU ARE STILL A DINGBAT
