Canisius' Smith Gets New Deal

CHN Staff Report

BUFFALO — Canisius was just knocked out of the Atlantic Hockey playoffs, but its coach, Dave Smith, has received a contract extension. The new deal takes Smith through the 2010-11 season.

Smith just finished his third year as Canisius head coach.

"Dave has done an outstanding job leading our program and his efforts have earned him this extension," Canisius athletic director Bill Maher said. "He has dedicated himself to building a championship program at Canisius College. The hard work that Dave and his staff have put in has been evident in the team's improvement on the ice and through their involvement in the community."

Before joining Canisius, Smith spent three seasons as the associate head coach and recruiting coordinator at Mercyhurst, helping the Lakers to two league titles and two NCAA tournament appearances. He has also served stints as an assistant coach at both Bowling Green and Miami.

Smith graduated from Ohio State in 1992 with a degree in journalism/public relations, then spent the next six years playing professional hockey.
