Sioux's Forney Returning to USHL
CHN Staff Report
GRAND FORKS, N.D. North Dakota sophomore forward Michael Forney has decided to return to the United States Hockey League, where he will play for the Green Bay Gamblers.
Forney told the Grand Forks Herald that he hopes to return to college the season after that, though it may not be with the Sioux.
"I left on pretty good terms with coach (Dave) Hakstol and there's an option to come back," Forney told the Herald. "I really enjoyed my time at UND but I was only playing a couple of games a year and I feel like I need to get a lot of games in."
Hakstol said he was OK with the move, and would welcome Forney back.
Forney, a highly-recruited player, played just three games for North Dakota last season. In his freshman year, he played 16 games with two assists. He was taken in the third round of the 2006 NHL Entry Draft by Atlanta.
Injuries were a big reason why Forney's abilities never materialized at North Dakota. He separated his shoulder and broke an ankle before even getting to North Dakota for his freshman year. He then separated his shoulder again during last season, and required surgery.
The old injuries continued to plague him this year, and he required surgery again after the season.
