Former BU Standout Cashman Passes Away at 39

CHN Staff Report

Former Boston University standout Scott Cashman died suddenly Monday, nine days past his 39th birthday, due to a heart-related condition. Cashman had been living in Constance Bay, Ontario with his family.

Cashman, who held many BU goaltending records at the time he graduated, was in net for three Beanpot championship teams, 1990, 1991 and 1992, winning tournament MVP in two of them. He was inducted into the Beanpot Hall of Fame in 2005.

Cashman was also the goaltender for the Terriers during their 1991 NCAA title run, which ended with the epic 8-7 overtime loss to Northern Michigan. He didn't start that game, instead relieving John Bradley following the first period. Cashman finished with 60 career wins at BU.

Cashman went on to a brief pro career. He was a sixth-round NHL Draft choice of the Minnesota North Stars in 1989, but never made the NHL. After fracturing his tailbone, he was diagnosed with Ankylosing Spondylitis, an inflammation of the vertebrae. Doctors told him it could lead to arthritis of the spine, so Cashman retired from hockey.

Cashman is survived by his children Markie and Johnny, his wife Sherry, his parents Dan and Judy, and his brother Jason.
