Team Canada Takes Goloubef, Not Wiercioch

CHN Staff Report

Hockey Canada has selected just one NCAA player to this year's team, and for the second straight year, it's someone from the Wisconsin Badgers.

Sophomore defenseman Cody Goloubef was named to the team on Monday. Goloubef, the 37th overall draft pick by the Columbus Blue Jackets in the 2008 NHL Entry Draft, made the 22-member squad that will compete in the 2009 IIHF World Junior Championships in Ottawa, Ontario from Dec. 26-Jan. 5.

Goloubef and Team Canada will be searching for a fifth consecutive gold medal at the event. Last year, former Badger Kyle Turris helped Canada to gold in the Czech Republic.

Goloubef joins fellow Badger sophomore Ryan McDonagh in the tournament as McDonagh will skate for Team USA. Both will miss the Badger Hockey Showdown and the Jan. 2-3 series against Northern Michigan.

Denver defenseman Patrick Wiercioch — a freshman who changed his commitment from Wisconsin to the Pioneers at the last minute — was by-passed by Team Canada.
