Bruess Suspended One Game

CHN Staff Report

MANKATO, Minn. — Pursuant to WCHA policy, Minnesota State has suspended junior forward Trevor Bruess one game.

Bruess was suspended for a hit on North Dakota defenseman Derrick LaPoint. LaPoint went hard into the boards and suffered a broken leg. He had surgery this week and will miss the remainder of the season.

Bruess was not assessed a penalty on the play.

“We need Trevor to understand that he needs to make every possible effort to avoid these types of incidents and want to emphasize to him that he is responsible for his actions on the ice,” said WCHA commissioner Bruce McLeod. “We hope he will use this as both an educational experience and as a time to reflect on his play.

“We also want to use this occasion to again let all of our conference-member student-athletes know that the game must be played not only within the rules but within the spirit of the rules at all times.”

In addition to the suspension, Breuss has met with Director of Athletics Kevin Buisman and head coach Troy Jutting to explain his actions and discuss the seriousness of his actions.

“A hockey player is responsible for his actions,” said Jutting. “Hockey’s a physical game and Trevor’s a physical player, but you have to play under control and with respect to your opponents.”

Bruess, who will serve his one-game suspension Feb. 24 when the Mavericks play at Nebraska-Omaha, will also be required to meet with WCHA Commissioner Bruce McLeod to discuss his actions.

Bruess has seen action in 30 games for the Mavericks this year and has recorded 11 goals and four assists for 15 points.
