CCHA All-Rookie Team Spreads the Wealth

FARMINGTON HILLS, Mich. — For the first time since 1997 and second time ever, six different CCHA schools had one player on the 2010 CCHA All-Rookie Team.

Determined by a vote of the conference’s head coaches, the team will be honored at the 2010 CCHA Awards on Thursday, March 18, at the Fox Theatre in Detroit.

2009-10 Rookie Team

F Andy Taranto, Alaska-Fairbanks (Chicago)
F Terry Broadhurst, Nebraska-Omaha (Orland Park, Ill.)
F Chris Brown, Michigan (Flower Mound, Texas)
D Torey Krug, Michigan State (Livonia, Mich.)
D Joe Hartman, Miami (St. Cloud, Minn.)
G Mike Johnson, Notre Dame (Verona, Wis.)

Andy Taranto, a 21-year-old, was chosen as CCM CCHA Rookie of the Month twice and finished the CCHA season with a scoring line of 12-19-31. Taranto was also named CCM CCHA Rookie of the Week three times and captured the freshmen scoring title by 10 points. He was second in power-play points (14) and fifth in point scoring (31) among all CCHA players. Taranto was the only unanimous All-Rookie Team selection.

Terry Broadhurst, 21, had nine goals and nine assists for 18 points in conference play, placing him in a tie for fifth place in freshmen scoring. Broadhurst was named CCM CCHA Rookie of the Week on two occasions and tied for second in game-winning goals among rookies (2), tied for 12th overall. He was one of two freshmen to net a hat trick in CCHA play this season.

Chris Brown, 18, finished second in CCHA scoring among rookies with 10-11-21. The Phoenix Coyotes draft pick tied for first overall in power-play goals (7) and led all freshmen with three game-winning goals, tied for fifth overall in the CCHA. Brown was named CCM CCHA Rookie of the Week once.

Torey Krug, 18, led all CCHA rookie rearguards with 16 points, finishing tied for eighth among all rookies and tied for fifth among all CCHA defensemen. Krug was named CCM CCHA Rookie of the Week once, CCM CCHA Rookie of the Month twice and National Rookie of the Month once.

Joe Hartman, 20, placed second among rookie defensemen and 15th among all CCHA freshmen with 10 points. Hartman scored two short-handed goals to tie for the league lead and posted a +18 rating in 27 conference games, placing him first among all rookies and third among all rearguards.

Mike Johnson, 21, posted a .912 save percentage to lead all rookie netminders and place ninth overall in that category. Johnson finished the season with eight victories to tie for first in wins among freshmen goaltenders. His 2.57 goals-against average also led all rookie netminders.
