Schroeder Leaves Gophers

CHN Staff Report

Minnesota sophomore Jordan Schroeder has signed an NHL contract with the Vancouver Canucks, the team that drafted him in the first round last June, No. 22 overall.

Minnesota just finished its first sub-.500 season (18-19-2) since Don Lucia took over as head coach in 1999-2000.

After a tremendous freshman season, where Schroeder 13 goals and 45 points in 35 games and won CHN's Rookie of the Year Award, the 5-foot-9 Prior Lake, Minn., native struggled at times this season. He had nine goals and 28 points in 37 games, and was a minus-7. That was enough to finish second on the team, behind senior Tony Lucia.

Schroeder's struggles this season, missing former linemates Ryan Stoa, who turned pro after last year, and Jay Barriball, who was lost for the season due to injury, caused some to speculate if he would leave in mid-season, a la Kyle Okposo a few years ago. In a rare move, the school even put out a press release in mid-season to shoot down the rumors.

Schroeder played for the U.S. World Junior Team this year, helping it to win a gold medal.
