Vermeulen Named Top ECAC Defensive Forward

CHN Staff Report

ALBANY, N.Y. — ECAC Hockey today announced Travis Vermeulen from St. Lawrence has been named the winner of the league’s 2009-10 Best Defensive Forward Award.

Vermeulen, the Saints’ captain this season, was outstanding on faceoffs, undoubtably the best penalty killer on the team, and played on both the power play and team’s top line. The Centerville, Minn., native led the Saints in scoring with career highs of 17 goals, 24 assists for 41 points in overall games, and led the team with 13 goals and 15 assists in conference play.

He was second on the team with plus/minus rating of plus-11.

St. Lawrence head coach Joe Marsh often referred to Vermeulen as “the best defensive forward he has ever coached.”

The other finalists for the award were Joe Scali, Cornell and Aaron Volpatti from Brown.
