Pittsburgh Among Four Finalists for 2013, 2014 Frozen Fours
CHN Staff Report
Pittsburgh, St. Louis, Philadelphia and Boston are among the finalists to host the 2013 and 2014 Frozen Four.
As many as 13 schools were being considered, but the NCAA recently pared it down to at least these four finalists. There may also be others, but that is unknown at this time.
St. Louis — which will host the NCAA West Regional in 2011 — last hosted the Frozen Four in 2007, while Boston, usually a common location, last hosted in 2004. Philadelphia, which has been in the mix before, and Pittsburgh have never hosted before. The Pittsburgh Penguins are opening the new Consol Energy Center next fall.
Buffalo, which hosted in 2003, was part of the 13-team mix, but did not make the final cut.
"Hockey is hot here right now," said Marty Galosi, an assistant athletic director at Robert Morris, which is hosting the Pittsburgh bid.
The process is new to Robert Morris, but it and Pittsburgh seem to have a strong shot and a lot going for it.
"I talked to everybody," Galosi said. "People are so cooperative. I work in a lot of platforms ... and hockey people, they're competitive, but they're so focused on their sport and helping everyone."
