Rohlik Leaves UMD, Continues Assistant's Carousel

CHN Staff Report

The filling of three head coaching openings in the CCHA this offseason are having implications in the WCHA, as the coaching carousel turns to the job of assistants.

Minnesota-Duluth is looking for a new assistant after 10-year man Steve Rohlik left to become Mark Osiecki's assistant at Ohio State. Rohlik and Osiecki was college roommates at Wisconsin, and Rohlik was captain of the 1990 national championship team.

Rohlik came to UMD when Scott Sandelin took over, in 2000-01, and has been with him ever since.

“I was happy and proud of Mark when he got that job,” Rohlik told Kevin Pates of the Duluth News-Tribune. “When he called me, I looked at this opportunity as the best thing for me. I’m no different from any coach – you want to keep getting better in your profession with the hope of someday being a head coach. We have a unique relationship and that counted for a lot in my decision.

“At the same time it is very hard to leave UMD. Scott Sandelin gave me a chance here and Duluth has become a home for me, my wife and our three children. But I feel good to be able to walk away knowing I gave an honest effort, and that this program is in good shape.”

Meanwhile, Wisconsin is still looking to fill two openings, with the departure of Osiecki and of the other assistant, Kevin Patrick, who will become head coach of Muskegon in the USHL.
