Wrenn Leaves Denver for WHL

CHN Staff Report

Sophomore defenseman William Wrenn has left Denver to sign with the Portland Winterhawks of the Major Junior Western Hockey League.

Wrenn had one assist and a team-worst minus-8 plus/minus rating in 18 games for the Pioneers (13-5-4) this season. He finished his DU career with eight assists in 41 games.

Denver coach George Gwozdecky took the high road.

“William has decided to leave our varsity hockey program and concentrate full-time on his hockey career,” Gwozdecky said. “William feels he will have a better opportunity to play on a regular basis and contribute in a more important role at the junior hockey level. He was a good teammate and was well liked in our locker room. William will be missed by our program.”

He is the second WCHA defenseman to leave this week, though the other, Minnesota-Duluth's Dylan Olsen, is more highly-touted. Olsen, currently playing for Team Canada at the World Junior Championships, signed with Chicago, who drafted him in the first round in 2009.
