Providence Interviews 3 for Opening

CHN Staff Report

Providence has narrowed its coaching field down to a select few, and three finalists have already been interviewed this week — David Quinn, Mike Cavanaugh and Nate Leaman — sources indicate.

Quinn, a former NHL First Round pick and Boston University player (1984-87) and assistant coach, has been a head coach of Lake Erie in the American Hockey League the last two seasons and is currently in the playoffs. Quinn has also been an assistant coach at Nebraska-Omaha and Northeastern, and been a head coach in the USHL.

Cavanaugh, a one-time player at Division III Bowdoin, has been an assistant coach at BC the last 16 seasons, helping build three national championship teams.

Leaman has been Union's head coach since 2003, after previous assistant coaching positions at Maine and Harvard. After leading the Dutchmen to their first-ever NCAA Tournament appearance in Division I this past season, Leaman was named Spencer Penrose Award winner as the nation's Coach of the Year. Leaman recently vehemently denied that he was interested in the Providence position or that he was interviewing, as he said last year when sources indicated he was discussing the Ohio State opening with Buckeyes officials. But sources indicate he was on campus today.

Other sources indicate that current Holy Cross coach Paul Pearl may also interview this week.

Following this season, in which the Friars failed to make the playoffs, Providence athletic director Bob Driscoll decided to make a change and let coach Tim Army go after six seasons.
