18 NCAA Players on Team USA Invite List

CHN Staff Report

Team USA has invited 18 current NCAA players, out of 30, to its World Junior tournament training camp, which will take place Dec. 17-23 in Camrose, Alberta. The camp will include three exhibition games against Russia, Switzerland and Slovakia.

The final U.S. National Junior Team roster is expected to be announced on Dec. 22.

Team USA will compete in the 2012 World Junior Championship from Dec. 26, 2011 - Jan. 5, 2012, in Calgary and Edmonton.

The U.S. National Junior Team is coming off back-to-back medals in the IIHF World Junior Championship for the first time ever, having earned a bronze medal in last year's event in Buffalo, N.Y., and a gold medal at the 2010 World Junior Championship in Saskatoon, Sask.

The list of 30 has been pared down from the 45 that participated in the evaluation camp in Lake Placid in August.

The goaltenders include a pair of players who each originally committed to Michigan, only to bail out to go to major junior — Jack Campbell, who has been on the Team USA roster the last two World Junior tournaments, and John Gibson. Cornell's Andy Iles is the emergency backup goaltender.

Returnees Derek Forbort (North Dakota) and Jon Merrill (Michigan) highlight the defensive corps. BU's Adam Clendening and Notre Dame's Stephen Johns are also among the group.

There are three returnees among the NCAA players in the list of forward invitees — Minnesota's Nick Bjugstad, BU's Charlie Coyle and Denver's Jason Zucker. Kyle Rau (Minnesota), T.J. Tynan (Notre Dame) and Austin Czarnik (Miami) are among the others, as well as a pair of Ivy Leaguers, Cornell's Brian Ferlin and Yale's Kenny Agostino.

The team will be coached again by Dean Blais, head coach at Nebraska-Omaha. The director of player personnel is former Yale coach Tim Taylor.
