Minnesota Freshman Guertler Arrested on DWI Charge
Forward Suspended Indefinitely
CHN Staff Report
MINNEAPOLIS Minnesota freshman Gabe Guertler has been suspended indefinitely for a violation of team rules by Gophers coach Don Lucia.
Guertler, who scored 51 points (31 goals and 20 assists) in 60 games for the Fargo Force (USHL) last season, was arrested in Minneapolis by University of Minnesota police early Saturday morning after being pulled over on his moped. According to Hennepin County public arrest records, Guertler was charged with fourth-degree DWI.
Guertler was released without bail. The 18 year-old from Plantation, Fla., is due in court on Oct. 11.
"While we are still gathering information at this time, we take this matter seriously and feel a suspension is warranted," Lucia said in a statement released by the university. "We will continue to monitor the situation and will handle the matter internally."
The Gophers athletic department declined to comment further at this time other than that Guertler’s suspension will be re-evaluated in November.
