Thompson Hat Trick Lifts UConn Past BU
CHN Staff Report
HARTFORD, Conn. Freshman Tage Thompson's hat trick helped propel Connecticut to a 5-2 win over Boston University at the XL Center on Tuesday. It was the Huskies' first Hockey East win of the season.
It was the second hat trick scored by a UConn freshman this season. Max Letunov had a hat trick against Alabama-Huntsville in the season opener. Letunov also scored UConn's only two goals in a loss to BU last week. Letunov was originally recruited by BU but had to switch to UConn over an admissions issue.
The Huskies scored four times on the power play in the win.
All three of Thompson’s goals came on the power play as the Huskies finished four-of-seven on the night.
UConn’s four power play goals was the most in a game since hitting that mark in an 8-3 win over Sacred Heart in 2011-12. The win also marked the fourth time under head coach Mike Cavanaugh that the Huskies have knocked-off a team ranked in the top-10 nationally, three of those wins coming at home in the XL Center.
Letunov was held without a goal in this one, but had two assists. Junior netminder Rob Nichols turned in a season-high 36 saves to garner the win.
Thompson, a Connecticut native, struck for his first goal of the season at 6:13 in the first, burying a rebound. BU answered late in the period with a power play of their own as Danny O’Regan buried a pretty pass from Charlie McAvoy on a two-on-one to knot the game at 19:27.
The Huskies added a pair in the second period to take a 3-1 lead into the second intermission. In the third, Thompson scored back-to-back power play goals at 16:01 and 16:46 to complete the hat trick.
