Ohio State 3, Ferris State 2 - Sunday, March 17, 2013

After three hard-fought, one-goal games, Ohio State advances, winning the final two games of the series. The series was everything you'd expect from the 4-5 seeds in the CCHA. Ohio State will face second-seeded Notre Dame in the CCHA semifinals on Saturday in Detroit. Brady Hjelle made 47 saves to stave off Ferris State, and got a third-period goal from Anthony Greco for the game winner. Ryan Dzingel added three assists. Said Greco, "I just know they were changing and we were just trying to transition and it was (Curtis) Gedig that made a good pass to Dzingel for the shot. I was just trying to go in there hard."

“All in all, I am very proud of our guys. They played a great game. I’m not upset with them or the effort at all, just the end result," Ferris State coach Bob Daniels said. "There is so much that goes into the season from your equipment managers to the trainers to the players. It’s really sad when it comes to an end, just because of all the effort everyone has put in in order to have a great year. Since everyone is invested, when you lose, it hurts.”

"I told our team it's a huge step (getting to Joe Louis Arena), we haven't been there in a while," OSU coach Mark Osiecki said. "We're still learning how to play in big games and how to win. They played for their lives today. I can't be prouder of the way our guys played. ... We were on our heels in the second. In the third period we played pretty well and pretty structured; we played harder and blocked a few more shots heading to the end and I was impressed with our wing guys playing better on the walls."

Ohio State 3, Ferris State 1 - Saturday, March 16, 2013

Ohio State and Ferris State will meet Sunday night for a spot in the CCHA semifinals after the Buckeyes forced Game 3. OSU scored three unanswered goals -- from Dzingel, Max McCormick and Nick Oddo. "Obviously we came out the first period and played our style very well. The team had a different look in their eyes tonight," OSU coach Mark Osiecki said. "Are we going to execute perfectly? No. But as a coaching staff we never question their will to compete and play hard. Missing a step in this sport happens but they prepare well as a team." ... Osiecki said he made lineup changes, but it was just to keep the team fresh. "Hopefully using our depth can be beneficial for tomorrow. Overall, the puck went back and forth tonight and Ferris State does a great job of stretching you out and making it a tough game." ... Said Ferris coach Bob Daniels, "Stamina is certainly an issue. I plan on seeing a lot of energy in the first period and we will have to see what will happen in the end."

Ferris State 4, Ohio State 2 - Friday, March 15, 2013

Ferris State was one of three lower-seeded teams to get wins in the CCHA on Friday. Justin DeMartino scored twice as FSU rallied for the win, getting the GWG early in the third period. FSU then had to hold on. "I would prefer we keep trying to push and find another goal," FSU coach Bob Daniels said. "We have had a fault this year of getting a lead early and trying to milk it the whole way home; I would rather not play that way.”

"It went back and forth, the game changer was us being on a power play and taking a penalty which showed a lack of discipline on our part," OSU coach Mark Osiecki said. "This team has always responded to adversity; the undisciplined errors we have to correct. Ferris State played like they've been through this before and have been through a lot of playoff battles." ... Said OSU forward Tanner Fritz: "There was a different feel tonight but it’s tournament play and things happen so we need to respond accordingly.”

Ferris State 1, Michigan 1 - Saturday, March 2, 2013

Michigan finished with a win and shootout win, another strong weekend for the Wolverines, and the defense/goaltending seems to be peaking at the right time. It hosts Northern Michigan in a first-round playoff series, so we'll see if that continues. Michigan's 22-year NCAA streak is on the line now -- it must win two series and two games in Detroit to get that done -- no at-large bids this year. Michigan certainly has the offensive prowess -- it finished second in the league in scoring -- but its defense and goaltending has been poor.

Ferris State 4, Bowling Green 3 - Saturday, February 16, 2013

After Friday's stirring win, on a late tying goal and Ryan Carpenter's score in overtime, Bowling Green was unable to find the same magic Saturday. The Falcons again played without top netminder Andrew Hammond, who is sidelined with an injury. Kyle Bonis paced Ferris State with his 17th goal of the season. ... “We played better tonight than we did last night,” Bowling Green coach Chris Bergeron told the Sentinel-Tribune, despite the loss. “There was more of a purpose to what we doing, but we didn’t make enough plays. Our margin for error is so small and this game is clear-cut example of that. I’m happy with the way we played for the most part, but I’m not happy with the result.”

Notre Dame 5, Ferris State 2 - Saturday, January 26, 2013

With deja vu of last season's poor second half creeping in, Notre Dame got a sorely-needed win to get a weekend split with Ferris State. Like last year's five-game February losing streak that dropped Notre Dame out of the NCAA picture, the Irish had lost five in a row -- the last three home -- coming into this game. But goals by Mario Lucia and T.J. Tynan in the third period capped a strong night. Notre Dame actually played pretty well in Friday's loss, too, but didn't have anything to show for it as Ferris State won a tight game. Freshman Charles Williams got just his second start of the season for the Bulldogs, with C.J. Motte taking the night off. FSU has been a very streaky team this season -- this loss snapped a four-game winning streak.

The strange thing is, Notre Dame has been getting off to good starts. Friday was the fourth straight game it lost after scoring the first goal. "We've got to be better, it's plain and simple," Jackson told the South Bend Tribune after Friday's loss. "The thing that's most disturbing to me is, we're a better team than being in a five-game losing streak. ... It's just not acceptable. We've had great crowds, the band has been awesome. It wasn't for a lack of chances, though. We had scoring chances, and we didn't finish."

Saturday, the team finally got some big goals, even after scoring first again, then falling behind 2-1. “We really needed to respond tonight,” Jackson said. "I was getting into their wheelhouse during one of the time outs in the second period. We were turning the puck over too much. We did a good job early in the game and then we started turning it over. That’s when the momentum changed back in their favor.” Thomas Gerths scored to tie it, then senior Kevin Nugent got the first goal of his career in his 64th game.

Ferris State 5, Michigan State 2 - Saturday, January 19, 2013

Hey, don't look now, but Ferris State has won 5 of 6 after sweeping Michigan State, and has inched itself back near the top of the CCHA standings.

Michigan State finds itself in the basement, right with Michigan -- how strange, and what a weird way for this final CCHA season to be shaping up. The two teams that have dominated the league more than any other over the years.

Ferris State 3, Michigan State 0 - Saturday, January 5, 2013

A one-game weekend for both teams. Garrett Thompson scored all three goals, and C.J. Motte got the shutout for Ferris. Michigan State's struggles continue this season. Tom Anastos took the team to the NCAAs in his first season one year ago, but the honeymoon has long ended.

Western Michigan 2, Ferris State 1 - Saturday, December 8, 2012

Senior Mike Leone had just two goals last season, and none this season coming into the weekend. But after kicking off Friday's 4-2 Broncos win, Leone got the game winner late in the third period of Saturday's victory, giving Western an impressive sweep of Ferris State. ... "We've been talking about all week taking pucks wide and getting pucks on the net and I just wanted to shoot it on goal and get one of our guys coming in a rebound, but it took a good bounce and went in," Leone said. "I was actually just trying to get it on net and for a rebound for a guy coming in the slot, and it happened to go in. I was pretty excited."

After limiting FSU to just 12 shots Friday, Western allowed a more normal amount Saturday, but allowed one fewer goal. Problem was, FSU also tightened up on defense, and it was 1-0 late in the third. That's when Chase Balisy finally broke through, followed by Leone's less than two minutes later. Both came on the power play.

"Just an exciting way to win, obviously. We played a really good team this weekend," WMU coach Andy Murray said. "They made some adjustments, came at us hard to night, which we would expect they would do, and we found a way to win the hockey game. It was a battle back and forth. ... We knew that Ferris would play very hard and physical against us. I mean, they're not a program that's gonna allow you to win two games on them. We knew they'd put up a battle here tonight. They did some grinding drills this morning in their practice, so you knew they were coming in with some intent and were going to play us really hard. That's the sign of a great team, which Ferris is. They came in here on a roll, and we found a way to beat them twice, but it got everything out of our team, it demanded the most of our team."

Ferris State 3, Bowling Green 1 - Saturday, November 17, 2012

After blowing a 3-0 third-period lead Friday, only to win in overtime on Garrett Thompson's goal, Ferris State had a smoother ride Saturday, as it finished a sweep of the Falcons in Bowling Green. FSU came out of a rough-and-tumble second period with a 2-0 lead, let up an early power-play goal in the third, then held on.

Miami 4, Ferris State 2 - Saturday, November 3, 2012

With Ferris State still "Buzzing" from Friday's highlight-reel goal from Justin Buzzeo in a 3-0 win, Miami was able to respond to earn the split. Friday, C.J. Motte earned the shutout for the Bulldogs, but he wasn't as fortunate on Saturday. Jay Williams, likewise, played both games for Miami with fellow freshman Ryan McKay still injured. Buzzeo got another goal Saturday -- not quite as picturesque -- to tie the game after one period. But Sean Kuraly's first career goal gave Miami the lead for good. Kuraly, a 6-foot-2 freshman, was a fifth-round pick of San Jose last June, and came in highly-touted, and trying to earn a spot on the U.S. World Junior team. But he's been overshadowed so far by fellow freshman Riley Barber, who earned national Rookie of the Month honors for October. So it was good to see Kuraly notch one. ... Ferris State had a late power play with a chance to tie, but Austin Czarnik's second of the game for Miami, with the empty net, sealed it.

Alaska-Fairbanks 3, Ferris State 2 - Saturday, October 27, 2012

Both teams opened the CCHA schedule with a split of the weekend. Alaska allowed four unanswered goals Friday in a 6-3 loss, but bounced back Saturday to hold down the Bulldogs. Alaska outshot Ferris 17-5 in the third period, and got a goal with 50 seconds remaining in regulation from Tyler Morley to win it.
