Hockey East Tournament Roundup

Upcoming Tournament Games

Saturday, March 23, 2013 (Hockey East Championship)

Mass.-Lowell 1, Boston University 0

Friday, March 22, 2013 (Hockey East Semifinal)

Boston University 6, Boston College 3

Mass.-Lowell 2, Providence 1

Sunday, March 17, 2013 (Hockey East Quarterfinal)

Providence 3, New Hampshire 2

Providence comes from behind to defeat UNH and win the series in three games. Jon Gillies was just outstanding again for Providence in goal. New Hampshire sees a Hockey East tournament come to another disappointing end, but is very likely to still be playing in two weekends, when it hosts the NCAA Northeast Regional. Read all about it in our blog.

Saturday, March 16, 2013 (Hockey East Quarterfinal)

Boston College 4, Vermont 1

Vermont took a ton of penalties in the first period, somehow survived for a while, but eventually allowed a 5-on-3 goal and BC was off and running. Boston College found out before the game that coach Jerry York had another detached retina and would need surgery Monday, his second one of the year, and had to sit out. He will hopefully be OK for next weekend's Hockey East semifinal, which will come against long-time rival BU.

Vermont's season ends ... “I'm proud of our team. I thought we took a lot of steps this year,” Vermont coach Kevin Sneddon said. “Our kids played hard. We took a step in the right direction. We've got plenty more to go, but this is part of the process of climbing back up.”

Boston University 5, Merrimack 3

New Hampshire 4, Providence 1

New Hampshire keeps the series alive behind a hat trick from Matt Willows. Providence goalie Jon Gillies let up a rare bad goal midway through the third that gave UNH a 3-1 cushion.

Friday, March 15, 2013 (Hockey East Quarterfinal)

Boston University 3, Merrimack 0

Boston University was dominant, winning for the fourth time in as many meetings against Merrimack. We see the effect of the win, though, on the Pairwise. As expected, the loss drops Merrimack from the rank of TUCs. And because Record vs. TUC is a main criteria of the Pairwise, that 4-0 mark against Merrimack no longer counts for BU. It's a Catch-22. Still, it was better to win than lose, but BU dropped two spots in the Pairwise to 19th.

Mass.-Lowell 2, Maine 1 (1 ot)

Lowell became the first team to advance this weekend, after Thursday's Game 1 win. It outshot Maine, 37-19, but trailed in the third before tying. Then Dale Arnold won it at 1:50 of OT.

Providence 3, New Hampshire 2

Freshman Nick Saracino scored the game-winning goal at 8:06 of the third period to cap off a three-point night, as Providence won Game 1 and got itself close to that NCAA bubble.

Boston College 4, Vermont 2

BC went up 3-0, then allowed Vermont some life, including a third-period shorthanded goal that made it 3-2. Johnny Gaudreau's 19th, an empty netter, capped things off, however.
