Nyquist to Sign with Detroit

CHN Staff Report

Maine junior forward Gustav Nyquist, a Hobey Baker Award finalist the last two seasons, will give up his senior season and sign with the Detroit Red Wings, according to a report in the Bangor Daily News.

According to the report, Nyquist will sign an Amateur Tryout agreement and play immediate for the Wings down the stretch, then sign a two-year, two-way contract after this season.

Nyquist, a 5-foot-11 native of Malmo, Sweden, was selected by Detroit in the fourth round (121st overall) of the 2008 NHL draft.

The 21-year-old Nyquist led the Black Bears in scoring with 18 goals and 51 points in 36 games, including 11 goals in his last 12 games. Maine failed to reach the NCAA Tournament, however, when it lost to Merrimack in the Hockey East quarterfinals.

Last season, Nyquist led the nation in scoring with 61 points on 19 goals and 42 assists.

He is a two-time Hockey East first-team selection who was a first-team All-American last season.
