BC Picked First in HEA; CHN's Machnik Wins Media Award

CHN Staff Report

BOSTON — Hockey East kicked off its 28th season Tuesday with its annual media day held at TD Garden.

For the second straight season, Boston College was picked to finish first in the regular season by the coaches. Boston University, Maine and New Hampshire rounded out the top four.

The Eagles took seven of the 10 first place votes with BU taking the final three.

Hockey East also announced a new television contract with CBS College Sports, which will be in addition to the more regular deal with NESN. And league commissioner Joe Bertagna said another television deal would be announced soon, though declined to name specifics. He called this season's television schedule "the most ambitious we've ever had."

College Hockey News' Mike Machnik was the recipient of the 20th Joe Concannon Media Award.

Machnik will start his 19th year in his affiliation with Merrimack this coming season as its radio color analyst. Machnik is the first media member affiliated with Merrimack to be bestowed with the honor.

Machnik, who has been involved in college hockey since 1985, joined the Merrimack radio team with Dan Roche in 1991 and has done radio with Merrimack from 1991-94, 1996-05, 2009-present for a total of 14 seasons to date.

He joined College Hockey News and helped to launch the site in 2005, and has handled duties that include writing, editing, podcast interviews, and consultation for site building and infrastructure.

Machnik has also done some TV and radio work with Northeastern, the New Hampshire and Maine. Machnik was the recipient of two AP Broadcaster Association Awards — in 1994 with Merrimack Radio and in 2008 doing UNH games on New Hampshire Public Television (NHPTV). And in 1996, helped found USCHO.

Bertagna also spent much of the afternoon fielding questions about Notre Dame's possible entry into Hockey East. Bertagna declined to speculate, but admitted there is a chance Notre Dame would join, and that the decision is up to them. If that happens, he said, the league would look to add a 12th team, if possible. (see full story)
