NBC Sports Announces National College Hockey TV Package

CHN Staff Report

NBC Sports Group has announced a 16-game national college hockey package for this season. The games will air on Versus — which re-brands to NBC Sports Network on Jan. 2.

As first reported by College Hockey News during the summer, this deal was being worked on for a while and hinged on NBC securing agreements with each of the different conferences.

The most significant news in the announcement is that Hockey East will air its postseason tournament games on NBC Sports Network. Hockey East is still working on a new deal with long-time partner NESN, and the tournament games may continue to air there as well. According to Hockey East spokesperson Pete Souris, NBC Sports Net will likely black out the tournament games in New England, while NESN continues to air them with its own crew.

Notre Dame and NBC Sports, which already have a well-known partnership in football, agreed to a deal that will put all Irish home games on the network once Notre Dame moves to Hockey East in 2013-14.

Television was a large driver of Notre Dame's decision to pick Hockey East as its new home.

The first broadcast on Versus will be Dec. 31, when Boston University and Notre Dame meet at 7 p.m. Eleven of the games will be part of a Friday-night package, and will compete against CBS College Sports' package.

All conferences except Atlantic Hockey are represented in the deal.

"We are excited to be launching our first-ever college hockey package by building a destination on Friday nights on the NBC Sports Network with many of the preeminent brands in the sport," Jon Miller, President of Programming for NBC Sports Group, said in a statement.
