Bowling Green Freshman Suspended By NCAA

CHN Staff Report

Bowling Green recruit Ralfs Freibergs will not be eligible for most of the upcoming season because his Latvian junior team competed in a professional league, the Sentinel-Tribune reported.

Freibergs, 21, has been in the USHL the last couple of seasons, but previously played for the Latvian national team at the World Junior Championships in 2009 and 2010. That team played in the Latvian pro league as a way to prepare for the tournament, a violation of the NCAA's amateurism standards.

"We knew, as a program, as a staff, this was a possibility. It's not something out of left field," Bowling Green coach Chris Bergeron told the Sentinel-Tribune.

Freibergs is suspended 33 games, which would take him to the second to last regular-season weekend of the upcoming season. Bowling Green could choose to sit him the entire year so that he's eligible for a redshirt, but Bergeron said that decision has not been made.

Freibergs still can practice and participate in all day-to-day activities with the team.

"He's still coming to Bowling Green," Bergeron told the paper. "He's told us he's committed to coming here and he'll be a part of international student orientation here in a couple of weeks."
