Merrill Expected Out Six Weeks

CHN Staff Report

Michigan defenseman Jon Merrill suffered a slight neck fracture during the team's exhibition game with Windsor on Tuesday, and will miss approximately six weeks.

Michigan coach Red Berenson confirmed the news after Wednesday's practice. He said Merrill had a cracked vertabrae, but it was not displaced. He will immobilize it and should have a complete recovery.

Merrill was injured on a hit from behind into the boards during Tuesday's game.

Merrill was a second-round NHL Draft pick of the Devils in 2010. After missing half of last season because of a team-imposed suspension, Merrill played well upon his return and is expected to be a significant impact player for the Wolverines this season.
