WCHA Resets Tournament Plans

CHN Staff Report

The WCHA will scrap its "Alaska Plan" and have an eight-team postseason tournament starting next season, according to the Mankato Free Press.

Next season is when the WCHA goes through a monumental shift, losing numerous teams and gaining many others.

Originally, when the new formation was announced last summer, the league said that, as a cost-savings measure, it agreed to have the two Alaska schools play each other in the first round of the tournament, regardless of where the teams placed in the standings.

Instead, the new plan will have only 8 of the 10 teams make the postseason, with no such Alaska restriction.

The Free Press report also indicated that the semifinals and finals of the tournament would rotate between Xcel Center in St. Paul, Minn., and Van Andel Arena in Grand Rapids, Mich. The new Big Ten is also planning to use Xcel Center in alternating years, while the NCHC will hold its tournament in Minneapolis' Target Center.
