DeKeyeser to Sign With Red Wings

CHN Staff Report

Western Michigan junior defenseman Danny DeKeyser will forego his senior year to sign with the NHL's Detroit Red Wings, according to TSN's Bob McKenzie.

The move is not a surprise. DeKeyser was highly sought after last season, but decided to stay in college one more year. Once Western Michigan was eliminated from NCAA tournament contention, the sweepstakes was on for the free agent.

The Red Wings were always considered the frontrunner because the Detroit Red Wings' minor-league coach in Grand Rapids, Jeff Blashill, was Western Michigan's coach in DeKeyser's freshman year. DeKeyser also attended a Red Wings prospects camp last summer.

DeKeyser is also a Michigan native, who grew up playing with the son of Red Wings assistant general manager Jim Nill.

In three seasons with the Broncos, DeKeyser had 12 goals and 49 points in 118 games.
