Szmatula to Attend Northeastern

CHN Staff Report

Michael Szmatula will attend Northeaster after all.

Earlier this offseason, the incoming freshman requested to be released from his National Letter of Intent, with sources indicating he was attempting to attend the University of Denver to play for his former USHL coach, Jim Montgomery, who took the Denver job in April.

Northeastern denied the request at the time.

Earlier this month, Szmatula and his family met with Northeastern coaches and decided he would play for the Huskies this fall.

Additionally, Zach Aston-Reese, another highly-touted recruit, will also likely attend Northeastern this coming season.

Szmatula finished last season with 76 points (37 goals, 39 assists) in 63 games with the Dubuque Fighting Saints last season. Aston-Reese totaled 30 points (9 goals, 21 assists) in 60 games with the Lincoln Stars (USHL) last season as an 18-year-old forward.
