Sacred Heart Knocks Off No. 1 Lowell

First Non-League Win Since November 2011

CHN Staff Report

LOWELL, Mass. — Sacred Heart, which won just two games last season after starting 0-22-2, knocked off CHN's Preseason No. 1 Massachusetts-Lowell, 2-1, in both teams' opener Friday at Tsongas Arena.

Sacred Heart had not defeated a non-Atlantic Hockey opponent since November 2011, and finished last season ranked last in KRACH. Its final record last season was 2-30-4.

Lowell started off slowly last season before steamrolling through the second half and into the Frozen Four.

Drew George scored a power-play goal for Sacred Heart early in the first period, while goaltender Alex Vazzano held the River Hawks at bay.

Lowell didn't tie the game until the third period on a goal from Joseph Pendenza. But it took just 85 seconds for the Pioneers to respond with another goal from George to re-take the lead.

Vazzano stopped 35 of 36 shots.

Lowell had tied its exhibition game with McGill last Saturday.
