Parker, Smith Will Coach U.S. Team at Tournament

CHN Staff Report

Recently-retired Boston University coach Jack Parker was selected to coach the U.S. Men's National Select Team at the 2013 Deutschland Cup. He will be assisted by former Northeastern coach Ben Smith, and Parker's former BU assistant Mike Bavis.

The Deutschland Cup will be staged Nov. 8-10 in Munich, Germany, and include teams from Slovakia, Switzerland, Germany and the United States. The U.S. participates in the event in odd numbered years.

Parker retired at the end of last season after 40 years as BU's head coach. He compiled a record of 897-472-115 and three national championships. The wins are the third most in college hockey history.

Internationally, Parker served as head coach of the U.S. World Junior Team in 1996, and as an assistant in 1995.

Smith has been head coach of the U.S. Olympic Women's Team on three occasions and is currently a scout and advisor for U.S. National Teams for USA Hockey. He also guided the U.S. Women's National Team its first-ever gold medal at the IIHF Women's World Championship in 2005, and racked up five silver medals as a head coach in that tournament.

Smith, who was inducted into the U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame in 2009 as part of the 1998 U.S. Olympic Women's Ice Hockey Team, was an assistant coach under Parker at Boston University for nine seasons (1981-90).
